There’s more to photographing people than a traditional headshot. After nearly two decades behind the camera, I’ve brought together a broader selection of my portrait photography — and the possibilities available for personal branding.
Beyond the Headshot
Headshots are a big part of what I do, but they’re only one way of photographing a person. Across nearly two decades I’ve photographed artists, performers, musicians, models, professionals and people simply wanting to create something interesting together.
That work now has a proper home on this website. My new Portraits page brings together a much broader selection of portrait photography, from natural and understated images through to editorial, creative and more deliberately constructed work.
It also gives people considering a personal branding session a much better sense of what we can create together. Branding portraits can move well beyond a conventional headshot, incorporating different environments, lighting, styling and approaches to create a more varied and individual set of images.
I work with both analogue film and digital photography, in my Christchurch studio and on location. The approach depends on the person, the purpose of the photographs and what we want the finished images to feel like.
Portraits With Personality
Sometimes a clean professional headshot is exactly what’s needed. At other times, particularly for personal branding, artists, performers and creative professionals, there’s an opportunity to make something with more personality and a stronger sense of place.
For personal branding in particular, that flexibility allows us to create photographs with different uses in mind — from websites and LinkedIn to speaking profiles, social media, editorial content and broader marketing imagery — while keeping the photography connected to the individual rather than relying on a formula.
That might mean working with an environment, experimenting with lighting, shooting on film, or simply allowing a portrait session more room to evolve. Some of my favourite portraits have come from leaving space for unexpected things to happen.
Bringing this work together has been a reminder of just how much portraiture has run through my photographic practice. The technology, locations and people change, but the intention remains much the same: to create photographs that feel considered, individual and connected to the person in front of the camera.
